Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of living in a Retirement Residence varies by location, suite type and service package.
Subsidies are not available in private pay Retirement Residences in Ontario.
Most residences have floor plans available so you can plan what furniture, art and accessories you would like to bring prior to your move.
Retirement Homes are covered under the Residential Tenancies Act. You will sign a Residency Agreement but only 30 days’ notice is required to terminate the agreement.
No, accommodations in Retirement Homes are all rentals.
Many Retirement Residences welcome pets but ask to be certain. If pets are allowed, you are fully responsible for your pet and to provide an emergency contact should you be unable to care for it.
Retirement Homes in Ontario are licensed under the Retirement Homes Act and covered by the Residential Tenancies Act.  You can find more information on the Ontario Retirement Communities Association website at www.orcaretirement.com. 
It depends on the residence. Many have fully licensed dining rooms, pubs or other areas. Happy hours are very common. Ask at those Homes you are interested in to determine if this is the case.
People consider a move if:

  • find themselves with too much time and too little to do
  • find maintaining their home difficult
  • are feeling nervous or insecure in their home
  • would benefit from better nutrition or have health care issues
The Ontario Retirement Communities Association (ORCA) represents more than 90% of the retirement homes in Ontario and maintains a list on its website:  www.orcaretirement.com. There are also many websites that can provide information listings such as www.senioropolis.com and www.thecareguide.com.
